Inspirations for Huck & Jim

 

By shrouding Huck in shadow, Thomas Hart Benton's lithograph "Huck Finn" makes Twain's famous character closer in color to Jim, and may thus unwittingly get at a deeper truth.


 

INSPIRATIONS FOR HUCK & JIM

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) contain two of Twain's most famous characters: the runaway slave Jim and the inimitable young Huck. Both were influenced by two real-life African Americans from Missouri and Illinois, recent scholarship suggests.
